Saruuh Kelsey joins Hope To Read to tell more about the
behind the scenes of writing The Beast of Callaire…
Behind the scenes of The Beast of Callaire looked a lot like this:
There was a lot of research involved, and even more reading. Those are only a third of the books I read, the others being digital, and YA fiction with mythology not pictured. There were days when I did nothing but research, and others where I was buried in Word document after Word document of notes and references to include in the books I wrote. I ended up with thirty pages of notes and a lot of highlighted paperbacks.
Before I could actually get to the writing of the book, next I went through an intensive planning stage, where I collected and singled out all important notes for the book I planned to write (because The Beast of Callaire is the first in quite a long series, there were a lot of other things tying into later books) and strung them together with all the things that happen in the book, important character developments, and world building.
At this point, I’d usually leave the planning for a while for any new story ideas to pop up, but because I spent so much time on researching for The Beast of Callaire, I went straight into writing it.
It took me about three months to write the first draft, two months for the second draft, and four months after that for it to resemble the book it is now. So that’s behind the scenes of The Beast of Callaire: much research, many hours of plotting, and the frantic typing of words for months after.

Genre: YA Fantasy/Mythology
Yasmin is a descendant of the Manticore. A creature of Persian mythology. A Legendary.
But she doesn’t want to be. Unlike the Legendaries in The Red, Yasmin wants nothing more than an ordinary life. She tries to fool herself into believing that she doesn’t change into a beast every full moon and savagely kill innocent people.
But when Yasmin starts hearing a voice in her head and is drawn into dreams that aren’t her own, she is led to Fray—a girl who once saved Yasmin from hunters, who has shadowy memories that hint at her having Legendary magic—and Yasmin is catapulted into a life of Majick and malevolence.
Despite the danger around her and Fray, Yasmin might finally have a chance at being a normal girl with a normal girlfriend. But with Legendaries being killed, a war between the Gods brewing, and the beast inside Yasmin becoming stronger each moon, her mundane life is little more than a dream.
